February 1-7 -- Sacred Harmony: The Musical Wesley Family

An exhibition celebrating the contributions to church music by the Wesley family, Sacred Harmony: The Musical Wesley Family, will premier 1 February 2007 at Bridwell Library, Perkins School of Theology, beginning a series of events commemorating the tercentenary of Charles Wesley's birth.

The exhibition, curated by Dr. Carlton R. Young, professor emeritus of Church Music at Emory University and editor of The United Methodist Hymnal, will feature correspondence, hymn and tune collections, books, and scores illustrating the formation and development of eighteenth-century British Wesleyan-style worship song, and the musical education and career of several generations of the Wesley family. The exhibition pays special attention to John, Charles, Charles Jr., Samuel, and Samuel Sebastian Wesley and will run through 28 April in the library's Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Galleries.

On 1 February 2007 at 4:30 p.m. Dr. Larry Palmer of the Meadows School of the Arts, SMU will perform Charles Wesley, Jr.'s keyboard "Sonata in F Minor" at Perkins Chapel. Following the recital, Dr. Nicholas Temperley, professor emeritus at the University of Illinois, will give a lecture entitled "Music and Charity in 18th-Century England." Immediately afterwards the exhibition opening and reception will be held in Bridwell Library.

The tercentenary celebration will continue on 4 February at 8:00 p.m. in Perkins Chapel, when Dr. S T Kimbrough, Jr. will present "Charles Wesley: The Sweet Singer," a dramatic presentation on the life and hymns of Charles Wesley.

In conjunction with Ministers Week, on 5 February at 4:45 p.m. Dr. Richard P. Heitzenrater, professor of Wesley Studies at Duke Divinity School, will present the lecture "The Wesleys and Money," in the Hughes-Trigg Theater followed by dinner with special entertainment by Dr. Heizenrater "John Wesley's Oxford Variety Show," in the Hughes-Trigg Ballroom. The evening will conclude at 7:30 p.m. in Perkins Chapel with "A Wesley Festival: An Evening of Hymns, Choral Music and Organ Works by the Wesley Family," led by Dr. Carlton R. Young and featuring Dr. C. Michael Hawn, professor of Sacred Music at Perkins School of Theology. In addition the Choir from Custer Road United Methodist Church, with Director Tim Morrison, will sing "Omnia vanitas et vexatio spiritus" by Samuel Wesley in a new transcription and edition by Carlton R. Young.

The exhibition will travel to the Duke Divinity School Library and be on display, 15 June-1 August 2007, and then to the United Methodist Archives Center at Drew University, 15 September-15 November 2007.

May 6--(Sonntag Kantate), all the Methodists in and near Berlin are invited to attend a service celebrating the Charles Wesley tercentenary. An exhibition informs about life and ministry of Charles Wesley. A pdf of the program is available.

June 22-24 -- Observances of the tercentenary of Charles Wesley are being planned through the Continuing Education Office of Duke University Divinity School and will include public lectures, integrative workshops, and celebrative events. Contact persons: Dick Heitzenrater/Paul Chilcote

July 20-22 -- The annual meeting of the CWS will be held in conjunction with the Historical Convocation of the General Commission on Archives and History of the United Methodist Church in Washington, DC . Plenary speakers and workshops will focus on the contribution of Charles Wesley to the Methodist heritage.

August 1-5 -- A European Methodist Festival will be held in Bratislava, Slovak Republic to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Charles Wesley's birth.  Details are available through Dr. Martin Brose (m.e.brose@ginko.de).

August 14 -- Charles Wesley: to serve the present age. Special Oxford Study Day programme to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Charles Wesley, in Oxford UK. Contact pforsaith@brookes.ac.uk.

August 12-21 -- During the Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies, held at Christ Church, Oxford, British and European members of the CWS (and American members present) will meet and participate in a day of celebrations related to Charles Wesley. One (and perhaps more) of the working groups of the Institute will focus the life and work of Charles Wesley.
